xsane: "Failed to create file: Permission
I my opinion, the error message in xsane should be changed to point out
which file it tries to create. With the current error message, it is
impossible for normal users to solve this problem.

Just wanted to confirm this is still alive and well in 7.10. The entire
~/.sane directory's owner was set as root. Doing sudo chown -R to the
current user fixed the problem

This is caused by one or more files in ~/.sane having their owner set to
root, due to xsane having been run as root at some point in the past.
Fixing the permissions or clearing out the files removes the error
messages (I just removed the entire directory, then reran xsane to
create a new one).
