Binary package hint: compiz

To get it out of the way:
No, I'm not using nVidia or ATi (yes, I know it'll be the first question).  I'm 
using Intel graphics.
Yes, compiz is definitely running.
Yes, gtk-window-decorator is running.

Beryl works for me and ahs always worked for me.  Compiz has never worked for 
me.  Here are the ways I've tried to start Compiz:
1. Using the Beryl-Manager applet, change to gtk window decorator, change to 
compiz
2. Starting in Beryl, use "Desktop Effects" app in System > Preferences
3. Starting in Metacity, use "Desktop Effects app in System > Preferences

What works:
I can alt+tab between windows
I can alt click drag windows around

What doesn't work:
No window borders (and like I said above, yes, gtk window decorator is running)
No virtual desktops
No wobbly windows
No cube

I've tried killing and restarting gtk window decorator multiple times to
no avail.
