Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This particular bug has already been reported and is a
duplicate of bug 963633, so it is being marked as such. Please look at
unity-panel-service: no process found -this part of the error message was
certainly a clue - I re-ran unity-panel-services and voilà, the launcher and
top menu are back.
I still don't know why or how I lost that component of unity is I had not
played with ccsm or done anything peculiar
