Machine was up to date. I got panel back after second unity-2d reinstall
along with reinstalling lightdm, and all unity(-2d) packages

Can you make sure you have all the software on your system up to date?
i.e. do an update && dist-upgrade?
Also post the output of running
dpkg -l | grep unity
in a terminal
