I did a little research here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html
And it turns out that the 1.0-9755 binary driver no longer supports the
"ti 4400", whereas the 1.0-9633 binary driver does.
So, it looks like X has a legitimate complaint there. However, that
still leaves all of my other point
