Public bug reported: I have a HP Pavilion dv6-6186nr with "Beats Audio" (whatever that means). As best I can tell, the notebook has four speakers: two under the grill at the base of the screen ("top") and two along the front, under the wrist rest ("front"). When playing audio through the headphone jack, everything works perfectly (including muting the speakers). However, playback through the speakers reveals two problems:
1) There is no bass coming through the speakers. Only midrange and treble is produced. This isthe major annoyance. 2) Sound is only produced from the two top speakers. I don't particularly care about this fact, but perhaps it's a clue to what's going wrong. Various online resources have suggested adding options to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. I've tried each of the following individually without effect: options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1 options snd-hda-intel model=hp-dv5 options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4 options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4-1 options snd-hda-intel model=hp One option did make a difference: this produced sound only from the front speakers: options snd-hda-intel model=ref In the sound settings "Hardware" tab, I have chosen the "Analog Stereo Duplex" profile; none of the digital options work. I wonder if perhaps alsa thinks there is a subwoofer, and is therefore shunting the bass away from the speakers. But this is just a WAG.
