Also, running nautilus from the dash or searching for nautilus and
running it from there makes no difference for me.
Alt+F2 and "nautilus" seems to work correctly.

I have to add, however, that there seems to be something related to a
process running in the background or some sort of timer. On my computer
it takes about 15 seconds for the nautilus window to appear in the
ALT+TAB menu. Switching between windows doesn't seem to have any effect
on time. Tested on

Same problem in Ubuntu 12.10 using gnome-shell 3.6.2-0ubuntu0.2,
nautilus 1:3.5.90.really.3.4.2-0ubuntu4.1
If I restart gnome-shell ("Alt+F2" then "r"), Nautilus appears in the
Alt-Tab dialog.

I'm also having this on gnome-shell 3.4.1, ubuntu 12.04 and nautilus 3.4.2.
Interesting fact (might help developers): If I switch back to nautilus windows
(which can only be done by pressing the activities button and clicking its
window, since alt-tab wouldn't find nautilus), resize nautilus' win
I am having this issue on Ubuntu 12.04. It's a bit annoying really.

alt+f2 -> nautilus does work
starting via dash seems to be the problem. most of the time you can't alt-tab
to nautilus.
executing nautilus -q and starting via dash again seems to fix the problem for
1 time.

After reading the bug 868032 thread, I don't understand why fixing it
should have fixed this. It's the main nautilus window that doesn't show
up in the task switcher, not a file operation progress window.

This should have been fixed with nautilus 1:3.2.1-0ubuntu3.1 as an
update for Ubuntu 11.10 as nautilus bug 868032.
I don't have this problem with GNOME Shell in Ubuntu 12.04 but I don't
have a 11.10 install around to test.

you wrote dash, do you mean unity? in any case if nautilus is not listed
in alt-tab it's a bug in the process building alt-tab, ie shell or
unity, not in nautilus
