A gotcha here is that after I ran an apt-get upgrade, the segfault version
reappeared.
I reinstalled xpdf_3.02-21_amd64.deb to make it go back to that version.
Is the suggested remedy to put xpdf on hold sta

OK, I fixed this by installing the amd64.deb versions (after removing
the i386 ones)
libpoppler13_0.16.7-2ubuntu2_amd64.deb
xpdf_3.02-21_amd64.deb

I tried the solution posted in # 2, but it fails on attempt to install with
dpkg. What can I do to get a
