I also agree with the previous two posts.
If we have to stop using the system tray icon, what does Canonical
suggest we should use?
I can only think of splitting the application into two parts. A service
and a UI with the UI managing the service.
This might be big changes and add up on the cost
I gotta agree with Sebastien; this seems like a horrible idea. There
are apps that will *never* directly support Unity's notification area,
but work fine with whitelisting. I regularly use at least three that I
had to whitelist manually.

That seems like a bad idea, users are still complaining about broken
softwares, including spotify from the bug triaging I did this week, not
that we current offer a good user experience, we just screw those users
and isv, but dropping the whitelist is a step further in that direction
