The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.

could test the new release and verify if this is still an issue -

Your DVD drive seems to be hdd based off your 'dmesg' file that was
attached. It also seems that it may be having some hardware problems as
indicated by:
[17179605.94] end_request: I/O error, dev hdd, sector 786432

DVD is hdd - that's what Ubuntu assigned it to. Is that a problem?
Not sure what hardware trouble might be as it works perfectly well in
windows and did under Feisty until 2 days ago.
