After trying several combinations and playing around, I found that my
initial assumptions were incomplete, and that the problem arised from
the application using the PC/SC interface, not pcscd. I'll therefore
change the bug status to invalid.
The full story:
I use a Java application called
Conclusion: Ubuntu 12.04 provides a mechanism to automatically start
pcscd, but it is not via the systemd files in /lib/systemd/system/.
Exact. See http://ludovicrousseau.blogspot.fr/2010/09/pcscd-auto-
start.html
This mechanism has been replaced by another one using systemd in version
1.8.0.
Sorry, here is the requested output. Before, no pcscd was running, after
launching the command there is task pcscd --auto-exit -df shown in
the output of ps.
stefan@luna:/$ PCSCLITE_PCSCD_ARGS=-df pcsc_scan
PC/SC device scanner
V 1.4.18 (c) 2001-2011, Ludovic Rousseau ludovic.rouss...@free.fr
pcscd is started correctly with no error.
I don't know why it does not work.
You can configure pcscd to be stared at boot as explained in comment #2.

systemd support was added in pcsc-lite version 1.8.0. Ubuntu precise
still only have version 1.7.4-2ubuntu2
(http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=pcscd)
To check what your problem is do:
1. kill any running pcscd
2. install pcsc-tools package if not yet installed
3. run in a terminal
Thanks for the quick response. Indeed, the installed version is
1.7.4-2ubuntu2. Find below the requested output:
root@enterprise:~# PCSCLITE_PCSCD_ARGS=-df
root@enterprise:~# pcsc_scan
PC/SC device scanner
V 1.4.18 (c) 2001-2011, Ludovic Rousseau ludovic.rouss...@free.fr
Compiled with PC/SC lite
You did not follow the procedure correctly.
Use PCSCLITE_PCSCD_ARGS=-df pcsc_scan on the SAME line
And be sure to kill any running pcscd process before.
And do not do that as root but as a normal user.
