Public bug reported: Since I "upgraded" (I did a clean install, just without erasing /home) from 10.04 to 12.04 (both 64-bit) I can't reliably connect an external display.
I tried it with the same screen (Dell S2409W connected via VGA) and experienced these different situations (I guess behaviour might have changed due to some upgrades to X.org-related packages): Previously: 1) Preferences -> Display panel hangs (after rebooting I configured the external screen using xrandr and it worked) 2) After disconnecting the display system sometimes hung, requiring hard reboot (Ctrl+Alt+F1 didn't work) Now: 1) Even if I enable the external screen in Prefenreces -> Display, the virtual screen is not widened, nothing shows on the external display as well 2) Configuring an external screen using xrandr: $ xrandr --auto --output VGA1 --mode 1920x1080 --right-of LVDS1 $ xrandr --auto --output LVDS1 --mode 1440x900 --left-of VGA1 makes the virtual screen wider but still nothing shows on an external display. 3) Sometimes experimenting with both xrandr and Preferences -> Display applet causes the OS to hang I am currently unable to make this external display work, being forced to only use the internal laptop one.
