I have exactly the same problem as reported by @jones-home after
upgrading to Precise Pangolin: microphone connection is detected but
signal (input level always 0).
$ aplay -l
List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC883 Analog [ALC883 Analog]
In my case I've discovered that, if I connect a microphone to the back
mic connector, gnome-control-center detects it but can't get any sound
from it.
If I connect a microphone to the front connection everything works as
expected. So I've used this to workaround this bug.

is there any progress on the bug? Am I asking in the right place? Is
there some community of people who can help me?
More info: I have a Logitech Camera connected with USB to my laptop.
This lack of working microfphone forced me to use Windows, which is
forcing me into more propriatary software
This seems to be similar to what I have found after upgrading to
precise. When I plug in a webcam with micorphone via usb, that works
(but I need the rear microphone jack working as the webcam is only
borrowed to test the point.)
See attached screenshot. The rear microphone jack is detected.
sure, but there is not much to be seen on a screenshot. When I speak the
input level is not changing. I cannot use Skype and I am forced to use
Windows so that I can do my work. Any suggestion?
