I have almost identical situation as post #4.
Newish 12.04 (August), installed all updates after installation, also
installed some flash plugins and testdisk

Just some additional information from another affected user. Downloaded
the latest 12.04.1 ISO on 11/3/12, burnt to CD, and installed on my
desktop. Selected updates and third-party software during installation.
Immediately after the installation completed and my PC rebooted, I
opened update
