This still does the right thing on Hardy - says that desktop effects
cannot be enabled (although it might be nice if it did it without the
flicker and if you do not have the binary drivers installed it will ask
you to install them and then after this is done tell you that desktop
could not be enabl
This seems to have been fixed in Gutsy as a dialog appears that says
"Desktop effects could not be enabled".

The legacy driver does not support texture_to_pixmap [1]. It went into

was only introduced with the 93xx series of drivers (what has now become
nvidia-glx). The only way to get compiz going on such cards is via XGL.

Right, it should, and it does. The problem may be that --check-composite
does not do the right thing for legacy cards. Unfortunately noone tested
this so far and gave me feedback until a week ago or so, when there
would have been time to fix it still. :(

Presumably the legacy driver needs some special options in xorg.conf to
work with compiz. Alternatively, if it really cannot work with compiz,
then r-m's --check-composite needs to return a code that tells d-e to
not proceed.
I do not have a legacy card, so this needs community testing/feedback.
