Hope this epic is of use to someone...
Using the same ubuntu-12.04-desktop-i386.iso, I put the image on a USB
memory stick. I then booted a Dell Optiplex GX-280 PC that I had lying
around. It installed from USB memory stick flawlessly. Lovely.
My generic PC (hostname rutherford) can't boot
