After trying to install limewire the package installer got stuck. Now
when I try to open synaptic I get this message, (see attachment). It's
still open and I can't shut it. Thanks

but network-manager which uses the notification area and it displayed
only when running

Just to add that this still appears to be a problem with 7.04 - in my
case references to Evolution hanging round after the package has been
uninstalled.
