When visual effects are off, the fade is smooth on normal->faded.
When visual effects are turned on, when going from smooth->faded it flashes and
is bad.

Note: After uninstalling Beryl, I tried to reproduce this bug, and found
that the flicker occurs only *after* typing the root password in "Option
1" and "Option 2", above.
In other words, the transition from the "normal" (i.e. unfaded) screen
to the grayed-out (faded) screen occurs smoothly. Flic
