Sebastien Marsching - I'm glad that you have found a fix!
If you want something more official/normal, 295.49-0ubuntu0.1 is
available for precise in nvidia-current-updates.
The worseness in precise with the old driver should be party fixed by
unity 5.12-0ubuntu1.1, which fixes bug #987304. This m
Peter, yes I was trying to install the nvidia-current from the quantal
repository, which has the dependency on the newer X version.
A few weeks ago I updated the affected system to precise. The version of
the nvidia-current package in precise had the same problems as the one
in lucid. In fact it
madbiologist - I believe he was trying to install from a different
source then I was. Perhaps from Precise as you suggested. The x-update
PPA directly supports 10.04.
We'll see if later kernel updates break what I've installed.

Peter - that's great news! And the x-updates PPA is nowhere near as
risky as the xorg-edgers PPA.
Now I am wondering why you were successful in installing newer drivers
and Sebastian was unsuccessful in doing so. If you can help him figure
that out that would be fantastic.
BTW, according to Can
Oh yes - I should have explicitly mentioned - it fixed the problems I
was having - no more freezing for me!

@madbiologist - I appreciate the efforts put into dealing with these
binary drivers - they are huge pain to be sure.
Unfortunately upgrading from Lucid to a later distro is not an option - I must
use this specific version for work related development.
I'm sure this isn't a valid solution - but
295.49-0ubuntu0.1 is available in Precise - see

Sebastian has made some good suggestions for fixing this bug in Lucid,
but the problem is that this driver is proprietary and closed-source.
Without the source code we can't do anyt
I have the same card (GeForce 8800 GTS), and the exact same version of
the driver and can see the same problem described here. It also pauses
when asking for password or other display fade events, and sometimes
when using terminal.
Uninstalling the driver caused the problem to stop, so I'm pretty

It might be fixed in 295.49, however there is no way to test this,
because 295.49 is only available in quantal while I am running lucid. In
fact I cannot install it manually either, because it depends on xserver-
xorg-core (>= 2:1.10.99.901) and the newest version available in lucid
is 2:1.7.6-2ubu
This should be fixed in 295.49 - see http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-
