I forgot this was filed. Yes, it was fixed in 12.04 (at least). I no
longer have that system so I can't confirm 12.10 kernels are ok but we
can assume yes. Thank you.

It's not even picking up my headphones in the hardware list.. yet it
plays through them as well as the main speakers. Very strange. Never had
this problem before Precise.

I have noticed this also. After testing it seems to be a race condition.
I can only reproduce it when headphones are unplugged (not plugged in).
Essentially what is happening is that the headphone port becomes
unavailable therefore the backend goes to remove that output which
results in the UI
