This is fixed in clamtk 2.32 in Gutsy. You still have to be root to
update, but clamtk now recognizes the updates. I will request a
backport for Feisty.

I uninstalled and purged klamav, clamav and all dependent packages.
I then reinstalled clamtk, clamav and all dependent packages.
On restarting clamtk, I got the message that signatures were 37 days
old.
When I ran freshclam from the command line, it advised me that the
signatures were up to dat

I don't know as I run Kubuntu and it shows up in KDE.

Thanks for your help.
I've uninstalled ClamTk and installed klamav in its place.
Unfortunately, I can't find a Gnome menu item for klamav.
Shouldn't one of these have been set up by Synaptic?

OK. Wait an hour or two and then look in the freshclam log (in
/var/log/clamav/freshclam.log) and see if the system freshclam updates
properly (it did when I tested this). You can then check running gksudo
clamtk to see if clamtk recognizes the update. I believe it will when
rung the gksudo.

I have the same problem on i386.
When running gksudo clamtk:
- on starting the app, it reported that the signatures were 27 days old.
- running Help>UpdateSignatures told me that signatures were up to date.
- quit gksudo clamtk
- started standard clamtk and was advised that signatures were 27 day
Additionally, I've confirmed that the normal clamav freshclam updates
continue to happen when clamtk is installed, so I'm not sure thig causes
a sigificant problem (definitions are updated hourly by default).
