same problem here in 12.04. the facebook and gTalk are fine but the
yahoo avatars are intermitent, sometimes shows, sometimes not!

Confirmed using Ubuntu 12.04, empathy 3.4.1.
Some protocols will show contacts (google talk shows contact icons,
yahoo does not).
Problem is intermittent. Sometimes when i bring up empathy, the contacts
will be fine and will persist. Other times on startup the icons will not
show and will
Hmm, now google talk is not showing icons as well, so perhaps it's a
problem as relates to protocol establishment?

Normal size with avatars is checked but avatars not showing.
btw i created facebook account on empathy in order to chat with my fb friends
and i can see their avatars.
When i login on facebook chat AND windows live at the same time , i am able to
see my self (windows live acount) on contact
