Can you please give some more details about this? r-m itself does not
install any kernels, just nvidia-glx or nvidia-glx-legacy.

When I tried to install the nvidia-glx driver via the restricted-manager
it wanted to install the linux-restricted-modules for the 386 kernel as
dependency. But this is unnecessary because the generic restricted
modules were already installed. And because the 386 restricted modules
have the 386
Through the daily updates i wasn't able to reproduce the bug as I described it.
Actually I removed the manual installed nvidia driver, then tried to install it
again via r-m. It only downloaded an extracted a file named
'nvidia-glx_1.0.9755+2.6.20.4-13.14_i386.deb'. After a reboot the XServer
Both -generic and -i386 provide the necessary nvidia API, so I guess
this was due to your manual changes.
The missing nvidia.ko modules is an issue, though.

This problem also appears on my Acer Travelmate C200 Notebook with a
freshly installed Feisty Beta (The CD version with no updates. As soon
as I updated everything the restricted-manger fails to detect my Geforce
Go 6200).
