does it work all the time once you installed xsane? or just until the
next reboot after running xsane once? any chance you can tell what exact
packages (dependecies) you installed when installing xsane?

Installed xsane from Ubuntu repo and tested it. xsane scanned my 10
pages documents without issue, the interesting part is that after
installing xsane, simple scan now also work...
now I also noticed that i'm running simple-scan 3.4.1-0ubuntu1.1
