Gary, I had this happen as well. What happened to me was the following:
I had chrome installed the icon worked fine. But when I uninstalled
google chrome, the chrome entry was still there (even after reboot) so I
installed alacarte and deleted it. Then on a later date I decided to
install chrome
I can reproduce this too, just completely removed chrome + config files
and tried installing the deb again via software center. After the
install completes the software center just says this program can be run
from the terminal using google-chrome, and that is indeed the only way
I can launch it.
Figured it out, it was this alacarte but that causes it (at least for
me) deleting the chrome .desktop file in
/home/brandon/.local/share/applications fixed it.

Hi dinamic, and thank you for your report. I have tried installing the
Google Chrome deb file and I was able to find the installed executable
by opening the Unity dash and typing Chrome. Therefore, it doesn't
seem I can reproduce this. Perhaps I am not understanding your expected
result?
