It seems this wasn't a bug in update-notifier, but a problem with the
download server. From what I see in the logs, update-notifier was
working as designed.

Because I didn't know how to change the assigned download server in the
configuration finally, today I thought about a different approach, which
consisted in using a different DNS server, just to check if maybe the
name of the mirror server wasn't being resolved properly by my current
DNS

While this issue it's resolved, you can use the command dpkg-
reconfigure to set another SourceForge mirror to download the fonts, or
even set a local folder. However, I don't know how to call the package
triggers again, once the package is already installed and configured.

just had the same issue. i guess it's because of sourceforge which seems
to have trouble with there servers. -try:
