Nevermind, Joseph's boot option suggestion doesn't fix it. I just got
one of those lucky boots with no issue I guess. Back to looking at a dim
screen on another reboot with the screen dimmed... Will try upstream
kernel now.

Chris, I've been gone and still haven't had a chance to test the latest
upstream kernel and I might not bother to unless it'd still help,
because I just added Joseph's setting to my boot options, and that fixes
the bug completely. Thanks Joseph!
