I am using an HP DV7 laptop (i7-2860QM)
in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base-conf:
I commented out:
# options snd-hda-intel model=auto
(# added)
Then added:
options snd_hda_intel model=hp-dv7
Then closed the file and did:
sudo alsa force-reload
It came up running.

Did you do a new install or an upgrade?
I did an upragde 2 weeks ago (from 10.10) and sound has been working
since but today all of a sudden it did not work and sound device was
represented by a Dummy Device.
'pulseaudio -k' restored sound and I will see if the problem comes back.
