The problem is solved if I install the `tp-smapi-dkms` package and
reboot. Under KDE, both batteries are identified and their charge status
is correctly reported. In the shell, `acpi -V` gives the same info.

I'm seeing almost these exact symptoms on a lenovo t420s.
I first saw one battery (BAT0) in the panel. I then ran 'upower -
monitor' and it indeed showed only BAT0. I then ran 'cat
/proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/stat' and I got this:

its working now! (Tested with Ubuntu 12.10 and kernel version
3.5.0-17-generic). But battery has to be locked!

I have the same/similar problem with a Lenovo T420s running 12.04.
The second battery is not recognized, and the laptop shuts down when the
first battery runs out.
I do not have this problem on the same hardware with 11.10 (which is
still installed).
