Public bug reported: Compiz CPU load is about 8% when system is idling and the screen is on. About 30 seconds after the screen goes blank the CPU load increases to 100% and remain at that level until keyboard or mouse activity enables the screen. At that time the CPU load returns to 8%. The system gets very hot and the fan is running at maximum speed when the screen is blank.
Problem came after upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04. No problem if using Ubuntu 2D mode.
