I have to say that going through launchpad bug pages there are many bugs
like this one, that kills a Linux user, or at least a Ubuntu user. I'm
kind of an advanced user that will keep trying, but...

potential workaround, could you please try the compat-wireless backport kernel
noted in https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-backports-modules-3.2.0 ?
If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel
After installing the compat-wireless backport the connection is more
stable, but still hangs many times. I'll try the mainline kernel later.
