So I will close the bug since its not actually Unity's fault rather an
update issue.

Same issue here (HUD would return no results, regardless of
application/query string). I had just updated from 10.04 to 12.04 and
was missing indicator-appmenu. Installing via. apt fixed the issue.

In answer to my own question, yes it does. apt-get install indicator-
appmenu, problem solved. Not sure why I didn't have it in the first
place though!
