Public bug reported:

I installed 12.04, "use whole disk", from a USB stick.
When I rebooted everything was ok. Then I took the USB stick out, rebooted, and 
I got "No operating system found".
Put in the USB stick, and it booted.
So GRUB was installed to the USB stick instead of the MBR of the disk I 
installed Ubuntu to.
grub-install /dev/sda from the live-usb fixed it.
A friend of mine got the same problem.
I used unetbootin to create the usb-install.
