Try to remove the ppdev module in feisty: 'sudo rmmod ppdev'. It worked for me
with an Epson Perfection 1260 (using the plustek backend).
The problem is also affecting the hp3900 backend, with an HP 4070 scanner, see

Oh yeah, forgot to tell that even though the updater crashed the system
remained stable, I rebooted manually and at the very least it seemed to work.

I used this command to get a strace dump: 'strace xsane 2 dump.txt'
If it hangs you have to kill the process, otherways it will continue to write
to the dump file.
I have also replied to another bug which was already reported for an Epson
Perfection scanner:

hmm, i got rid of my test user before and now it won't let me add a new
user (i add it, but then when i logout and try to log in under the new

Loïc: if the current 0.7.2 doesn't work for you, it must be something in
