It seems to have been rolled into the Sans font itself as an 'Extra
Light' setting. It can be set under SYSTEM -> PREFERENCES -> FONTS.
OpenOffice does let you select this option under Format -> Character.

I reported an earlier version of this bug and it looked initially like
it might have been corrected with a slight modification of the xorg.conf
file. Instead tonight the problem came back, so my early report was

I was unaware that the generic kernel is a more specific kernel than
i386. I am now running the generic kernel as my preferred kernel, so
this bug isn't so important to me now. I'm not sure why I ended up with
the i386 kernel when I upgraded from edgy to feisty, I'm sure I was
running the generic
Testing on fiesty beta.
Most of the times I shutdown, logout or hibernate on my test Pentium III 800
(asus mb) I got 5-7 lines of text from boot messages and system hangs up.
Probably this is the same issue.
This happens on fresh beta install after 2-3 successful reboots, shutdowns and
hibernate

I too have the same problem. My doubt is if it's not hardware related,

I got a usable workaround for the reported problem from the checkinstall email
list:
