I think max_user_watches should be set according on the system's RAM in the
desktop distribution and kept at the low default for the server distribution.
Does anybody actually know how much memory an inotify watch consumes?

I've got the same problem although the Power manager is enabled at the
boot. I use a Toshiba Satellite A35-S159 with Gutsy. It does the same on
a Dell Laptop.
The problem seems to come from X server.

when upgrading to Gutsy, only after manually reinstalling libasound2. In
any case, it should probably be automatically ran, though I'm not sure
how to automatically select the most sensible default soundcard.

I just upgraded to Gutsy and the rendering is still poor. I haven't
done a side by side comparison to see if it was better than Feisty (it
might be slightly better), but it still looks inferior to kpdf on FC6,
for example.
I should note that kdvi on a file generated by LaTeX file looks great
