I've done some toying with the shortcut keys and I was wrong, all I've tried
fail when NumLock is on, save "Run in Terminal". I've tried

The crash seems that was caused by adobe's flash plugin which we can do
anything about it, since it is closed source. You might want to report
it upstream directly.
Notice that you are not using ubuntu's packaged flash plugin (package
flashplugin-nonfree) I recommend you to migrate to the package

Well, this bug should obviously not be closed as it's not fixed and is
trivially reproducible. Upgrading to Hardy is not an option for me
either, especially considering that no one has actually confirmed that
the bug is fixed, just that "there are input related changes in alpha2."

I'm not knowledgable enough to answer your question re: backend.
Regardless, the workaround has worked. I no longer get the error
condition when I invoke the update manager.
