I use the nVidia driver for my graphics card. If Visual Effects on the
Desktop Background are set to anything other than none it causes the
help screens to disappear. An example would be if you opened calculator
and use the menu path Help>Contents. I
Confirming (finally!) that my inability to apply any of the various ugly
fixes was due to a second bug #89269. Valentin Neacsu's posted
workaround has enabled persistent safe hdparm rules for me in Hardy.

a defective block on the hardisk? maybe perform a surface scan? just a
means of reducing noise in the bug report... if your disk scan comes up
clean, you might be onto something.

I removed gdm and reinstalled it.

I have the same problem with ubuntu 8.04: I cannot print 2 pages on 1.

Confirming the same behavior on my Dell Vostro 1500 and its integrated webcam :
* Before starting the video recording, the preview works and the status LED of
the webcam is "on"
* When recording the video, the status LED is still "on"
* After ending the record, the preview stops and the status LED
I have a similar problem, not only with files that contain ampersand in
the path, but with all files. That is, if I add some files, audacious is
able to play them. When I close audacious and reopen, it's unable to
play any of the files in the list (which means that the "continue
playback on startu
I cannot confirm this bug on my Hardy installations anymore. It's been
fixed what I can see.
I testet both
$ sudo /etc/init.d/?dm stop
and
$ sudo init 1
And the shutdown process takes only 5 - 6 seconds which is normal, OK.
Testet both Ubuntu 8.04 32bits and 64bits installations.
As you said the bug is magically solved in Hardy

I just changed theme from Human to Clearlooks and tried with your
debug5: the upgrade process is getting several steps further now!
Unfortunately it still became unresponsive a couple of steps later.
Repeated attempts resulted in stop at same new place, see attached
main.log.
