This is wierd.
Now it works perfectly.
I just rebooted and I tried it again.

Oh jees.
I forgot about this report. I was having major problems with Hardy Heron, much
worse than this, and I ended up reinstalling about 10 times (even now its not
that stable) and I don't seem to have this problem anymore.
Is there any way to close this bug?

I've had the same behaviour after upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy
(everything was OK in Gutsy). But I've found solution for this -
installed package startupmanager, then set resolution of screen
(1024x768 in my case) and color depth (24 bits in my case) on Startup
Options tab, hit Close and now
I can also add that generally splash_down should be called from
initramfs so adding it to gdm script is really only a partial solution.

feisty version fixed this for me once, but later on even that would not

I have Hardy (2.6.24-16-generic updated from 7.10) on my HP Compaq
Presario V3415LA. All Fn keys works fine, except brigth up and down.
Those keys worked on 7.10
Another issue: when I unplug the battery wire, bright goes max, and when
i plug it again, bright goes low
My brightness Fn keys are:
A new kernel (2.6.24-17) was available in the Proposed section, I upgraded to
it and networking wireless isn't working anymore, like before. dpkg tells me

tells me that 2.6.24-17 is available. Why isn't it telling me

On my desktop nothing helped except adding to file /etc/init.d/halt (editing)
rmmod snd-hda-intelin the beginning of a file (under ### END INIT INFO ).

When I search for anything and click on the result (if it is a folder)
to see what is in it, and then try to go back, nautilus forgets all the
results and searches from the beginning.

I just discovered that I've had hardy-proposed in my sources since I was
testing other fixes last week. Will hardy-proposed auto-update? If so,
there might be some blame here.

I found my problem.
For some reason there was a Virtual line in my xorg.conf.
And it defined a virtual screen larger than the physical.
Gnome looked alright though...
I removed the line, and now GDM works fine.

I just had a thought: a number of people have suggested that this may be
disk I/O related, and some people have apparently been running the live
CD without problems. Has anyone tried doing a persistent install on a
USB stick, e.g. as on http://t-skariah.blogspot.com/2008/04/ubuntu-804
Same problem here. I am trying to use wmp54gs. In both Feisty and Gutsy
ndiswrapper was rock solid with weeks uptime. This uptime was pushing
100's of GBs to my HTPC from my machine. It just worked. I re-installed
Gutsy until this is resolved. I read the reason for the problems (Linux
and GPL
