I've found the same (on Intrepid with all updates installed). I'm not
prompted for java.
I installed a jre (I can't remember which one in Synaptic but it wasn't
a sun one) and the java web plugin wouldn't start and just hung firefox.
Not really sure what GCJ web plugin is in the Add-ons dialog but

starting a couple of weeks ago, when I cold-boot my Dell Vostro 1000 laptop I
always find it impossible to press and display characters whose code is > 127
(extended ascii), such as ì, è, ò, etc., and also @ (which requires alt-gr),
when I reboot the machine everything

I compiled zsnes with ubuntu gcc-4.2 and it doesn't crash anymore when
starting it.
Can someone else test it?
$ apt-get source zsnes
# edit debian/rules and add CC=gcc-4.2 before the ./configure stuff.
$ dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot
If we don't find the bug in gcc we should compile zsnes with gc
