I have several IMAP accounts set up in kmail, each account with its own

You don't have access to the DRI device. What are the permissions on
/dev/dri/card0 ? Are you member of the "video" group?

It can be seen in the log that X started with the "vesa" driver - the
one used by "failsafe mode", instead of the debug savage driver. I don't
know why, it worked fine with my own savage laptop. Well, I now included

Daniel, thanks for that info.. my computer has not had any sound for the
last 2 weeks (I'm a Linux n00b, just switched) and finally now I have
system sounds!! I still haven't figured out why movies and music won't
play, but at least I feel I'm almost there..
