One way to show which message needs attention would be to highlight it
some how in the task panel. In the attached mockup picture, there are
several windows open in Thunderbird and the bottom one is darkened to
show that it needs attention. That's just to help the discussion.
There are otherways
So, 6 hours of sleep later, I tried to re-access to the remote folder via
the network explorer. It displayed me an error message the first time i
clicked my folder (sorry, I couldn't catch this one). The second time, and
all following times, it opened gedit with the error shown in the
attachement.
Probable this still happens with karmic.
If you still have it, could you try to find out how the normal vista differs
with your vista meant for reinstalling?

I can confirm that this happens on my Ubuntu Lucid alpha install. I
tried to see if the problem would go away by simply deleting all my ~/.*
directories and re-logging in. It does not fix the problem. I also
tried setting the same value needed to get orca working:
