I think it is an Invidia problem, whether with dkms or not. And here's why.
I was using Lucid (NOT Karmic) in the compile above.
Ubuntu-Studio Lucid doesn't install or run any more for me; with some sort of
nvidia error in the installation process. I have filed a bug against

The current lucid build of mplayer-nogui will not accept any cli option
involving ass. This also renders it unusable with smplayer unless disabling
Freetype support in smplayer.
Please re-build mplayer for lucid as this should resolve.

problems. I've uploaded a fixed package to intrepid-proposed. Please

Unfortunately I thought that this bug had been fixed but it turns out
that the new strings were never imported into Rosetta and therefore
remain untranslated. Intrepid is quite close to end of life now and
there isn't time or reason to import the new strings and ask translators
to work on them
