Had the same problems on my wife's laptop, a Dell XPS 1530 (Intel CPU, Lucid
64bit, NVidia GForce 8600M GT card).
Uninstalling Plymouth seems to have solved it for now (although I think that is
not what the devs of Plymouth aimed for...).

I also got this problem.
Not only gnome-setting-daemon, but also conky has the same problem (which use
the sleep method to resolve)
The same configuration works fine in archlinux, so I think it's an
ubuntu specified bug.

During the update Nvidia kernel modules (current 190) failed to install

nothing will work on the network. So why is the boot sequence trying to
mount NFS mounts before the network interface is started?
