OK, disregard the above comment. I managed to disable pulse, and suspend/resume. On resume, the Alsamixer terminal reported that the sound device had been unplugged (see screenshot), but on reselecting the device (F6), it appeared to be unmuted. Music played, but only through internal speakers-
