I'm running 10.04 LTS don't plan to upgrade any time soon. I just
tried changing by visual effects setting from none to normal it
doesn't go black like it did before, but some of the windows are an
annoying translucent so I'll stick with None.

Please ignore my previous post. Those tests were done using
WDC WD20EURS disks, which are apparently unreliable.
I have replaced the disks with Hitachi HDS72202 and have
re-run the tests.

Another me too. Sorry, I only have the segfaults that were recorded in
my Xorg logs; 3 of them in short succession. My 945GM laptop has been
suffering from unpredictable hangs ever since upgrading to 11.04
(32-bit), which might be related. The 3 segfaults all happened within a
very short period of

don't want to introduce it anymore for the moment ;)

This also happens to me, with a Dell Vostro notebook.
As a temporary workaround, as soon as I turn on my notebook, I login,
logout, and then login again.

doing what Felix proposed at #16 didn't work on natty (2.6.38-8-generic):
# echo 1 /sys/module/i915/parameters/semaphores

However, doing what proposed on #18 solved the problem.

If you run virt-manager --debug it shows you a segment fault
