When I select the ubuntu session in gdm, compiz seems to start
correctly but the unity interface is never shown.
The system is somewhat usable otherwise, as I can get a terminal window
(the ctrl-alt-t shortcut) and then launch other programs from

your plotting photos.
Unfortunately I am plotting images recorded from 2D detectors, so
compression is not that good with png (yes I can post-convert to jpg but

If unity --reset is fixing the problem, it means its a problem with
compiz user configuration copied over from upgrades. In such a case,

Me too. Installing 11.04 64-Bit solved my trouble with my notebook. I
had to activate propretary drivers and it worked like a charm.
