Same problem here. I'm running Totem in a reduced window. The
screensaver is disabled but it is actually starting up since it is not

removed quiet and splash from default/grub config, update-grub but no
visual output, The sytem already stays in the empty purple screen.
Installed openssh-server, now i can ssh to the machine while in the purple
waitstate. I see that init and udevadm eat all ressources when using
Dual Athlon MP with MGA550 - with hardware or software cursor (see log
in 801994).
Was OK on Lucid, went through upgrade to Maverick and then Natty; was ok
in Lucid, didn't stay in Maverick long enough to check.
Given the range of hardware I doubt it's a driver issue.

I have exactly the same message on Mint 11. Gnome crashes and returns me
