Can you confirm whether that properly corrects most of the issue?

I upgraded a number of packages on my laptop this morning, and I think
these updates may have solved the problem. I've booted the system 6-7
times today without any problems. I'll report back if I spot a re-
occurrence of the issue, but I would assume it is fixed unless I post
anything else. The
Moving back to ubiquity, in this case, using persistence is just
highlighting some kind of race condition in ubiquity-dm between the code
setting the background and metacity, nothing that I can do about it in
casper.

Nothing to do with casper, I'm highly suspecting that the issue is simply the
USB driver or the kernel.
Note that USB disks can easily range from 2MB/s to 40MB/s, so the brand does
matter a lot.

I confirm that switching to openjdk 7 instead of openjdk6 solves the
issue on my computer :
sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jdk icedtea-7-plugin
sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-1.7.0-openjdk
That's good news.
Unfortunately, openjdk-6 is still the default JVM on Ubuntu 12.04 (see packages
