There are two bugs here; I'm describing the second, layered on the
first:
The first is that even though I have explicitly listed ~/.cache in the
folders to ignore, I get a complaint that it failed to back up something
in .cache.

This bug affects me as well.
Anyone got a script working to automate the creation of the separate
certificates and keys from inside the .ovpm file?
Would be a great workaround till this gets fixed

menu buttons overlap in non-English translations

It would be fine for them to look as if they were intentionally
different. As you suggest, a line of text and/or a progress bar would
achieve that. The problem is that at the moment they look as if they're
accidentally different.
